Wellness &
Mental Health
At TPP, we utilize Restorative Clinical Practice. This means both practicing mental health care through a restorative lens, and working intentionally to restore the fractured relationship between communities and social workers.
why mental health matters:
Incarceration and mental health are deeply interconnected. The justice system disproportionately impacts individuals with existing mental health conditions, while also intensifying trauma and creating new challenges during incarceration. Today, nearly two-thirds of people in prisons and jails experience serious mental health concerns. The transition back into the community can introduce additional stressors, making access to mental health support essential for successful reentry and long-term well-being
our approach:
At TPP, we combine clinical practice & restorative ideology to holistically and comprehensively address individual and communal wellness. This innovative and multi-faceted approach to mental health, coined by TPP as “Restorative Clinical Practice”, acknowledges that both evidence-based practice & lived experience are of equal importance in understanding cycles of harm and creating meaningful interventions. Restorative Clinical Practice is collaborative, community-centered, survivor-informed, and non-pathologizing.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE IN PRACTICE:
meetING clients where they’re at- literally
Traditional therapy offices often aren’t approachable or accessible, & just trying to get to them can turn our community away. & so our sessions happen wherever our clients want them to, including at people’s homes, sitting in cars, over an iced coffee at Dunkin, or even balanced atop milk crates in someone’s basement.
counseling as Collaborative
& relationship based
One of the pillars of RJ is “modeling,” meaning that any question we ask of another we must first be willing to answer ourselves. We seek to challenge the status quo and dismantle the power dynamic in traditional clinician-client relationships by embracing a collaborative and collective approach to treatment that centers community and fosters connectivity.
combining therapy & resource support
You cannot therapy your way out of an empty stomach or therapy your way into a safe place to lay your head. & so our therapy sessions are blended with resource support and often include working on resumes, visiting potential apartments, going to the dentist or even getting a new haircut- whatever our clients need to get to the next level.
taking care of the care takers
At TPP, many of our staff are formerly incarcerated & are actively navigating the same obstacles that they are supporting our community in overcoming. Because we believe that no one can pour from an empty cup, we prioritize mental health internally, offering a weekly mental health group & quarterly team wellness days for staff.
